SAMe (S-adenosyl-methionine)
Pet owner information sheet
💊 The most important rule: give this medication exactly as your veterinarian prescribed it — the right dose, at the right times, for the right number of days.
What is this medication for?
- Adjunct for liver disease: chronic hepatitis, feline hepatic lipidosis, cholangiohepatitis/triad disease, vacuolar hepatopathy
- Acute liver damage injury (acetaminophen, xylitol); patients on chronic liver damage drugs (e.g., anticonvulsants)
- Osteoarthritis / cognitive dysfunction support (human depression use)
How is it given?
Give exactly as your veterinarian prescribed — never change the dose or stop on your own unless your veterinarian has told you to.
- Empty stomach is the rule — food markedly reduces absorption; give ≥1 hour before feeding with a small water/food treat to speed gastric transit.
What if I miss a dose?
- Give it as soon as you remember — unless it is almost time for the next dose (then skip the missed one; never double up).
- Call your clinic if you miss more than one dose in a row.
Side effects — what should I watch for?
Effects listed as common in this handout
- Well tolerated (Main experience)
- Occasional stomach/intestinal upset / vomiting (Possible, reduced by empty-stomach dosing with water)
Worth a phone call to your veterinarian
- Any new symptom that worries you.
⚠️ Contact your veterinarian or an emergency clinic IMMEDIATELY if you notice
- Trouble breathing, collapse, seizures, severe vomiting or diarrhea, facial swelling, or pale gums
Before starting (or refilling), tell your veterinarian if your pet:
- has or has had: Unregulated nutraceutical — use proven-bioavailability products; no FDA efficacy standards
- is pregnant, nursing, or used for breeding
- is taking any other medications, supplements, or flea/tick products, including:
- Serotonergic drugs (human antidepressant co-use)
- No significant veterinary interactions reported
Storage and handling
Room temperature; tablets in original blister packaging (unstable on air exposure); administer intact.
Good to know
- Empty stomach is the rule — food markedly reduces absorption; give ≥1 hour before feeding with a small water/food treat to speed gastric transit.
- The detox rationale: liver disease depletes glutathione; exogenous SAMe restores hepatic (and RBC) GSH — basis for use in acetaminophen/xylitol toxicity alongside NAC.
- Keep the B-vitamin cofactors in mind (folate/B12/B6 needed for the SAMe→GSH step) — deficient patients may need supplementation for full effect.
- In acetaminophen toxicity SAMe is second-line/adjunct to N-acetylcysteine, not a replacement.
This information sheet is educational and supplements — it does not replace — your veterinarian's individual instructions. Doses are set by your veterinarian based on your pet's weight, health, and other medications.
