Imidacloprid (± permethrin ± moxidectin)
Pet owner information sheet
💊 The most important rule: give this medication exactly as your veterinarian prescribed it — the right dose, at the right times, for the right number of days.
What is this medication for?
- Fleas — adult + larval (Advantage)
- K9 Advantix: fleas + repel/kill ticks and mosquitoes (permethrin)
- Advantage Multi: HW prevention + fleas + hookworms/roundworms (+whipworms dog; ear mites cat) via moxidectin
- Sarcoptic mange, cheyletiellosis, mild demodicosis (combo products)
How is it given?
Give exactly as your veterinarian prescribed — never change the dose or stop on your own unless your veterinarian has told you to.
What if I miss a dose?
- Give it as soon as you remember — unless it is almost time for the next dose (then skip the missed one; never double up).
- Call your clinic if you miss more than one dose in a row.
Side effects — what should I watch for?
Effects listed as common in this handout
- Application-site irritation, temporary wet/oily hair (Minor)
- Moxidectin-component cautions (HW-positive dogs) (Per combo label)
Worth a phone call to your veterinarian
- Any new symptom that worries you.
⚠️ Contact your veterinarian or an emergency clinic IMMEDIATELY if you notice
- Permethrin toxicity in cats: tremors, seizures, overheating (from DOG product applied to cat or close contact) (The classic toxicology call)
Before starting (or refilling), tell your veterinarian if your pet:
- has or has had: K9 Advantix (permethrin) in/on cats — dog households with cats need separated application + drying
- has or has had: HW test before moxidectin combos
- is pregnant, nursing, or used for breeding
- is taking any other medications, supplements, or flea/tick products, including:
- Other spot-ons
Storage and handling
Applicators; EPA (Advantage/Advantix) vs FDA (Advantage Multi) split depending on combo.
Good to know
- The cat-permethrin disaster is the #1 client-education point in topical parasiticides: Advantix on the dog, cat grooming against it → tremoring cat at 2 AM.
- One base molecule, three product personalities: flea-only (Advantage), flea-tick-mosquito-dog (Advantix), flea-HW-parasite (Multi) — read the suffix, not just the brand.
This information sheet is educational and supplements — it does not replace — your veterinarian's individual instructions. Doses are set by your veterinarian based on your pet's weight, health, and other medications.
