Cefpodoxime proxetil
Pet owner information sheet
💊 The most important rule: give this medication exactly as your veterinarian prescribed it — the right dose, at the right times, for the right number of days.
What is this medication for?
- Skin infections (superficial pyoderma): Staph (intermedius/aureus/pseudintermedius), Strep. canis, E. coli, Proteus mirabilis, Pasteurella multocida
- Skin/soft tissue infections (susceptible organisms)
How is it given?
Give exactly as your veterinarian prescribed — never change the dose or stop on your own unless your veterinarian has told you to.
- Its labeled stopping logic is worth memorizing: treat 2–3 days BEYOND clinical resolution (max 28 days), and abandon if no response by day 3–4.
What if I miss a dose?
- Give it as soon as you remember — unless it is almost time for the next dose (then skip the missed one; never double up).
- Call your clinic if you miss more than one dose in a row.
Side effects — what should I watch for?
Effects listed as common in this handout
- stomach/intestinal upset (vomiting, diarrhea) (Primary effect)
- Hypersensitivity (Possible (cephalosporin class))
Worth a phone call to your veterinarian
- Any new symptom that worries you.
⚠️ Contact your veterinarian or an emergency clinic IMMEDIATELY if you notice
- Trouble breathing, collapse, seizures, severe vomiting or diarrhea, facial swelling, or pale gums
Before starting (or refilling), tell your veterinarian if your pet:
- has or has had: Cephalosporin/penicillin hypersensitivity
- has or has had: Renal disease — adjust; prolonged use invites resistance selection (see pearls)
- is pregnant, nursing, or used for breeding
- is taking any other medications, supplements, or flea/tick products, including:
- Antacids/H2 blockers (human data)
- Aminoglycosides
- Bacteriostatic antibiotics
Storage and handling
Room temperature; tablets/film tabs.
Good to know
- Once-daily oral 3rd-gen ceph = the convenience trade: good staph/gram-negative skin coverage, but zero Pseudomonas/enterococcus/anaerobe/MRSA activity — culture when pyoderma recurs.
- Its labeled stopping logic is worth memorizing: treat 2–3 days BEYOND clinical resolution (max 28 days), and abandon if no response by day 3–4.
- Cefpodoxime-specific susceptibility disks required — 3rd-gen cephalosporin sensitivity doesn't transfer between agents.
- Overuse of oral 3rd-gen cephalosporins is a recognized ESBL/MRSA selection pressure in both human and veterinary practice — reserve for documented need.
This information sheet is educational and supplements — it does not replace — your veterinarian's individual instructions. Doses are set by your veterinarian based on your pet's weight, health, and other medications.
