WSAVA guideline
2024 Guidelines for the Control of Reproduction in Dogs and Cats (2024)
S3 covers every non-surgical route to infertility. The mainstay is the deslorelin GnRH-agonist implant (dog ♂ 4.7 mg ≈ ≥6 mo, 9.4 mg ≈ 12 mo; tomcats 6–28 mo; surgery-alternative in young–adult queens), limited in older bitches by the flare-up (fertile oestrus 1–4 weeks post-implant; off-label use NOT recommended). Other routes: progestogens (uterine/mammary/metabolic risks), mibolerone (printed mg, likely µg [verify]), melatonin, reaction-limited immunocontraceptives, concentration-critical chemical castration (CaCl₂/zinc gluconate; intra-epididymal).
WSAVA Control of Reproduction in Dogs and Cats (Romagnoli et al., Reproduction Control Committee; JSAP 2024; doi 10.1111/jsap.13724)
Key findings
- Deslorelin dog ♂: 4.7 mg → ≥6-mo, 9.4 mg → 12-mo infertility (testosterone <0.1 ng/mL ≥180 d); <10 kg >2 yr possible; reversible; off-label BPH (3.1.1.1).
- Deslorelin cats: tom → infertility 6–28 mo; prepubertal queen → puberty +~4 mo; safe surgical alternative in young–adult queens (S6.9).
- Flare-up (bitch): fertile oestrus 1–4 weeks post-implant (even P4 >60 ng/mL); prevented by implanting before 4 mo of age, ≤60 d post-ovulation, ≤7 d post-partum, or after 7 d megestrol; older-bitch off-label use NOT recommended.
- Progestogen hazards: MPA >2.5 mg/kg or >q5-monthly → mammary tumours, CEH, diabetes, acromegaly; megestrol 8-day course → pyometra 0.8%; prolonged high-dose queens → mammary tumours, blindness, CEH/pyometra (3.1.2).
- Mibolerone & melatonin: mibolerone "mg/day" printed — historically µg [verify]; contraindicated in pregnancy, hepatic/renal dysfunction, Bedlington terriers; withdrawn; progestogens preferred in queens. Melatonin: 30 mg PO daily ×35 d (<30 mg ineffective); 18 mg implant best in interoestrus; ineffective in toms (3.1.3–4).
- Immunocontraception: GnRH-KLH → severe injection-site reactions in all dogs; queen 0.5 mL: 93% yr 1 → 27% yr 5; pZP not appropriate (3.2).
- Chemical castration: viable only with 7-day monitoring (S6.9) — not ferals; field zinc-gluconate orchitis 6%; CaCl₂ seepage → scrotal necrosis (3.3).

Recommendations
Deslorelin: safe surgery-alternative in young–adult queens; temporary infertility in young bitches
Expert consensus (WSAVA, S6.9)
NOT recommended: off-label deslorelin for oestrus suppression in older bitches
Explicit negative recommendation
Prevent flare-up (timing or megestrol cover); cyproterone 2 mg/kg PO BID ×14 d (behaviour)
Expert consensus (WSAVA)
Progestogens > mibolerone in queens; none after medical pyometra; MPA ≤2.5 mg/kg ≥5-monthly
Expert consensus (WSAVA)
pZP not appropriate; IUDs NOT recommended; gene therapy experimental
Expert consensus (WSAVA)
Intratesticular injection only with 7-day monitoring — not ferals
Expert consensus (WSAVA)
